OK if you watched the whole video I'm sorry. You could have stopped after the first minute to get the picture. As you can tell I'm not the first to hear about this, actually the video that claims to be the "original" has over 29 million views. Just goes to show how powerful these social media sites really are. Why does a video as pointless as this can get so popular? It definitely would not have happened without YouTube I'll tell you that.
With that said.... this one is the best!
I love that throughout the post you sound so firm against the act of posting these videos of the Harlem Shake, but in the end BAMMM this one is the best! I will say there is no chance this craze would have hit such a popular stage without the use of Youtube. Social Media at its finest.
ReplyDeleteTerrific example of the use of social media -- makes me think of the stories of those antics of the 1920s when people did all kinds of things and photographers followed them around; think it was flagpole sitting or something (no, I wasn't there, actually).
ReplyDeleteI can see why it is the craze. Kind of reminds me of when the Macarena was popular and everyone was learning the dance. Back then watching music videos on television was the thing to do. I think social media has come a long way. Funny videos.
ReplyDeleteI knew someone was eventually going to post one of these videos onto their blog. It's crazy how trends tend to take over YouTube and the Media at such a fast pace. Also, after watching a couple of these, I noticed a lot of universities are trying to do their best at putting out a harlem shake video. I'm guessing to get most of these students out there, Twitter and Facebook becomes a big source in spreading the word.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you Brendan. Certain social media trends just seem to pop up out of nowhere and take everyone by surprise with how mainstream they get. Some of the biggest such trends I can recall from 2012 are "Gangnam Style" and "YOLO"....And it's true that even some more prestigious institutions such as universities are being caught up in the craze. Just this morning actually I was watching a video of a radio-station that I listen to of their whole staff doing the Harlem Shake. Very relevant blog, Shane! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brandon as well! Its crazy how these dance trends become so huge like Jerking,Cat Daddy,Planking and of coarse Gangnam Style
